چکیده

= Abstract =An autopsy case is described of a premature closure of the foramen ovale with a marked dilatation of the left atrium and an intact ventricular septum with aortic atresia but without left ventricular hypoplasia. This 28-week-old male baby was a stillborn to a 34-year-old multiparous mother. An intrauterine sonogram revealed marked ascites with anasarca, an enlarged left atrium and ventricle, a small right ventricle and breech presentation. An artificial delivery was done under the impression of congenital heart disease with hydrops fetalis. The heart weighed 20 gm, and the left atrium and ventricle were dilated. The foramen ovale was completely closed with rudimentary fossa ovalis. Fibroelastosis was present in the right atrium and ventricle. Both lungs were trilobed and showed lymphangiectasia. It was presumed that in this case, the premature closure of the foramen ovale was the primary event, and the aortic atresia was secondary.

Heart Carcinoid Disease with Patent Foramen Ovale Treated by Mini Sternotomy

This case report was an attempt to present the importance of diagnostic echocardiography and closure of a patent foramen ovale in carcinoid heart disease. Herein, we present a case of a 48-year-old woman with a carcinoid metastasis presenting with tricuspid regurgitation, pulmonic stenosis, patent foramen ovale, and borderline left ventricular ejection fraction on an echocardiogram. Surgical in...

Prenatal Narrowing or Closure of the Foramen Ovale.

PRENATAL closure or narrowing of the foramen ovale is an uncommon cardiac anomaly usually associated with neonatal death. Such cases afford a unique opportunity to study the effects of reducing a major intracardiac shunt normally present in fetal life. The current study demonstrates new consequences of reducing this shunt. In late gestation, about one half of the blood reaching the right atrium...

Giant aneurysm of the atrial septum associated with premature closure of foramen ovale

Premature closure or restriction of foramen ovale (PCFO) is a rare congenital anomaly that can lead to a wide spectrum of cardiac malformations. This spectrum of secondary malformations appears to depend on the gestational timing of closure of the foramen ovale and to the degree of restriction. Earlier in the gestation, closure of the foramen has been associated with severe hypoplasia of the le...

Neonatology Today

The term, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), initially proposed by Noonan and Nadas,8 describes a diminutive left ventricle with underdevelopment of mitral and aortic valves. A patent foramen ovale or an atrial septal defect is usually present. The ventricular septum is usually intact. A large patent ductus arteriosus supplies blood to the systemic circulation. Coarctation of the aorta is ...

Septum primum atrial septal defect in an infant with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a form of congenital heart disease characterized by severe underdevelopment of the left heart, leading to inadequate systemic blood flow. Several different atrial septal morphologies are observed in HLHS, most commonly a secundum atrial septal defect, patent foramen ovale, intact septum, and leftward displacement of the superior attachment of the septum...
